I've noticed that as I get older, I value practical gifts more than anything. I used to take advantage of gift-giving season to get useless shit. But now, I really appreciate when I receive, for example, an electric toothbrush for my birthday, and then brush refills for xmas. It just makes more sense.
Socks used to be my most... 'do-not-want' purchase but now I'm like,, helll yeah socks. Plus look at the pretty colors. I distinctly remember in elementary when we would have rap battles, and once a kid clowned on me for wearing green socks with cropped pants. And then I got self-conscious and never wore cropped pants ever again, until this day when I can finally live out my Truth!! Full circle huh.
Btw, I killed my header cause it was starting to feeling overwhelming.
can i just say, i love how witty your title is! but i can't help but agree :') i don't know why, but even way back then, i really preferred to recieve practical gifts and i'd be confused when other kids my age wanted dolls and toy cars when you can have cute colorful socks and clothes hahaha. really loving the colors of those socks <3
ReplyDeleteThanks haha! Love me a pun from time to time.
DeleteYou were ahead of the times! I wish I realized this younger too lol
this is so true! now that im basically living on my own all i want is people to gift me toiletries and necessities bc i hate spending so much on them. crazy how the world works, i would never in the past ask for toothpaste as a present and now i am begging for it
ReplyDeletea fucking look
Right? Like "plz help fund the necessities in my life." Good times adulting.
Deletereally not gonna give me an email address huh. ok i paste it here
ReplyDelete1)i went to kansai airport as direct flights from my airline in hongkong didnt go to kyoto directly. if you wanted tokyo, you go to narita airport. it's weird cuz haneda airport is closer to 'downtown' tokyo. my friend told me this he lived there for a while. but international flights take you to narita and from there you subway whereever. I dont even think you have much of a choice going from canada.
2) i dont like the complexity of buses even IN toronto LOL. i always fear getting lost so when im on vacay i always stick to subway. when i went to Japan i rented a car and drove to the nearest parking lot, then walked or subway to my destination if there was no parking. but that is expensive i know (kyoto isn't like tokyo you had to drive.) the subway station in narita to take you 'downtown tokyo' is narita line rapid train. there's an expensive option called 'narita express' but bcuz it's express, it costs more. and i'm cheap.
3) both options above take JR pass. but my friend used suica to get around tokyo because it's more convenient. it's also more pricey than using a pass - but there are time limits and different paths you can't take if you use the pass. suica was convenient, all normal JR lines and other subway lines take this top up card in tokyo. hope that helps. my friend said bcuz of olympics coming up, now a lot of subway machines in tokyo show english in preparation for visitors! You should not have an issue. also i was surprised by how okay the english was for a lot of employees in japan. asking will NOT be a problem.
4) i relied mostly on car in japan and it was amazing to drive by countrysides listening to Do As Infinity. i still have that feeling in my mind. for subway in tokyo, you would hardly be able to find a street where things didn't impress you. subway will 100% take you to your places.

*THE NARITA AIRPORT HAS A GIANT ROW OF GACHAPON MACHINES. Google "Narita airport gachapon machine" and look at the images!! there's a coin exchange machine and then you can go crazy buying really cool gachapon toys. dont forget to do this!!!!!!!!
*DO NOT GO TO TOKYO DISNEYLAND. My friend had a horrible time! the entire day was spent lining up and most of the rides/attractions you could even get into spoke to you in japanese so people around her would laugh and react and she just sat there clueless. she said waste of time and she'd never ever do that again. you gotta commute in if you are going there right? why stay outside.
*the shibuya pedestrian crossing - make sure you go upstairs and take a pic inside the starbucks overlooking the crossing as well. (shibuya station and go to the hachiko exit. i'm pretty sure hachiko is the dog that stayed for its owner and richard gere did a movie on it so take a pic by the dog statue.)
*ichiran ramen (eat at stalls by yourself loner style)
*tokyo skytree (the newest tall thing they have.) it's got a giant pokemon store inside of it as well the last time i checked, make sure you go there as well. lots of official stationery. good place to view the entire city
*if you want to view the city, the "tokyo metropolitan government building" is also decently high and has a FREE observation deck for public. free is free! the building has nothing else of interest in it. www.metro.tokyo.jp/english/offices/observat.html
*studio ghibli museum. my friend said YOU HAVE TO RESERVE. LOOK AT THE WEBSITE FIRST for info. (go to mitaka station, they have ghibli cat buses that take you to the museum directly and back.)
ReplyDelete*that street with lots of shops on both sides called nakamise-dori. both pictures and instructions to get there https://hubjapan.io/articles/visit-ueno-asakusa-japanese-temple-food-street-and-animals
*im not so big on temples i dunno why. there's one in tokyo ppl always reference: Meiji Shrine. google pics of it. instead i think "edo castle" is much cooler. but again i'm not big on this stuff.
*if you like sanrio stuff, "Sanrio Puroland" is an indoor theme park run by the official company. It's a bit drabby from what i heard but completely immune to bad weather so maybe that's a good back up option eh?
*did you watch abroad in Japan's youtube vid of the robot restaurant? Robot Restaurant of Shinjuku (B2F Shinjuku Building, 1-7-1 Kabukicho, Shinkuku-ku, Tokyo. go to Tokyo metro shinjuku-sanchome station and exit B12, walk straight to it.) i think there's coupons online make sure you google for one.
*i watched someone go to a sumo match in tokyo on periscope and it felt like the most japanese thing i ever watched lol. youtube and see if you want to try. "Ryogoku Kokugikan" is the tokyo place you can buy a ticket to watch sumo matches.
*my friend went to "tsukiji market" and liked it (the fish wholesale market ppl go visit for fun.) you can literally stand next to a huge tuna fish and scoop tuna off the side to eat which is as raw as it's ever gonna get.
ReplyDelete*stay at capsule hotel, internet cafe hotel, and love hotel if you have the guts. They aren't dirty - in fact much much cleaner than motels in America. love hotels have funky themes and room service food that tastes pretty good! and you can say you've been in one. theyre not too expensive either.
*I saw a full youtube walkthrough of tokyo's Ueno Zoo (Only In Japan channel.) Meh..
*walk around the streets at night and start popping into random yakitori / beer bars. just do it, dont plan this. completely safe.
*plan a meal or a few at convenience stores. just go into a 7-11/lawson/family mart and BUY fried chicken, onigiri, cake etc. as a full meal. you won't regret it.
*i wasn't gonna say this.. eh... animal cafes. My friend loved it. rabbit cafe, cat cafe, owl cafe, and even hedgehog cafe (6-7-2 roppongi, 2F iwahori building, minato 106-0032, tokyo. take the train to roppongi station and exit#3.)
*the upscale street Ginza. they have a 12 floor uniqlo last time i heard.
6) japan is a cash based society. you wont be able to use a foreign credit card at most shops. God i hate comment verification
7) can i come with? youre going by yourself? why!! i'll stay at another hotel it's fine i dont mind
